Mahim mayhem!

I overheard this at Mahim yesterday "Allah bol raha hai daro, main abhi hoon"

In the face of water logged streets, when parts of Mumbai have no water to drink, one has often heard the refrain “Water water everywhere but not a drop to drink”

A couple of days ago, Mumbai found a source of unlimited ‘sweet’ drinking water. The Mahim sea face turned saccharine apparently and there was mass hysteria, largely from members of a particular community. The presence of a dargah there accelerated the divine connection.

For those who haven’t seen it first hand, The Mahim creek or Mithi river has dark grey or black water flowing. It carries the dredge from everywhere it flows- a mix of chemicals, waste, human excreta and rotting stuff. It empties into the sea near Mahim. Thousands have been drinking this ‘sweet’ water now.Wonder why no one’s drawn the connection yet between the Mithi name and sea water turning sweet?

From my limited knowledge of Hindu mythology, I remember that Amrit Manthan with Vasuki being the churner took place in the sea. Lord Shiva consumed the poison which emerged first before the amrit. Maybe some of the leftover amrit’s surfaced a Yuga later!

This incident also reminds me of when my beloved Lord Ganesha started ‘drinking’ milk. Given his pot belly, I could imagine him accounting easily for a million gallons. Fortunately he stopped and I had enough left for a cup of tea the next day.

On a more serious note, the incident to me is indicative of a larger need. The community in question is under siege, for reasons well publicized and written about. Any reinforcement of strength, human or divine is always welcome. That ‘their’ Supreme one has made his presence felt through an apparent miracle will be reassuring .

cool post! very nicely written. But....

> from a particular community
being politically correct, uh?

> community in question is under siege
how? every possible concession is given.
1) Hindu temples are under govt control - not so for the Islamic faith.
2) Their pilgrimages are state-sponsored.
3) When we got independence, the Jama Masjid was rebuilt at the cost of govt. money - and the same govt. refused to contribute to rebuilding Somnath!
4) In AP the govt. announces a 5% reservation for them (thankfully struck down by the SC)
5) Choice to have their own civil code
6) Every time they make even a slight noise the govt. runs to make some concession.

Also, Ajith, see this story:

and note the following quote by the religious leader:
> Ever since independence, all governments at the Centre and in the states have been suppressing Muslims.

!!! i think it's high time we call a spade a spade and treat everyone in the country on an equal footing

thanks Sharan.
I agree but at some level these ShahiImams and the others make life difficult for the average Muslim by such proclamations.....
